Before you submit

Please read the following guidelines before submitting your work to The American Playbook.

What kind of files can I submit?

We accept audio recordings in .wav and .mp3 format.

What kind of files can I submit?

We retain a copy of each selected script alongside audio recordings for archival purposes. With your permission, we will also make your script available to theaters, literary managers, and agents who may be interested in your work.

How should I record my play?

Professional-grade recording equipment and editing services are not required. However, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure a high-quality recording:

– Choose a quiet setting, and be sure to edit out any audio interference.

– If you’re using software that specifies a loudness standard, 16 LUfs is preferred, though 24 LUfs will also be accepted.

– Assign only one actor per role (doubling often works well on stage, but rarely in an audio-only format).

– Avoid the use of sound effects or foley. This is meant to be a reading, not a radio play.

– Minor errors in actors’ delivery are acceptable. Major errors should be edited prior to submitting your recording.

– Carefully review your file before sending.

Will my recording be aired ?

While we would love to air every play submitted to The American Playbook, we cannot guarantee that your play will receive a spot on our website or podcast. If your play is selected, you will be notified by email.

I'm not American. Can I still submit?

Yes. We’re interested in plays not only by American writers, but also those who can contribute to a greater understanding of the American and global experience.

How long should my PLAY be?

While there are no minimum or maximum requirements, the podcast medium makes airing your unabridged Hamlet-length play a challenge. In general, shorter works are more likely to be accepted for broadcast. However, we will also consider longer works. For plays with multiple acts, please submit each act as a separate .mp3 or .wav file.

DO YOU ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS BY MAIL?

We are only able to accept electronic submissions at this time.

I SUBMITTED AND NEVER HEARD BACK. DID YOU RECEIVE MY SUBMISSION?

Upon completing your submission, you should receive a confirmation email within a few moments. If you have not received a confirmation email in 24 hours, we encourage you to reattempt your submission through the site.

By submitting a recording, you agree with our terms and authorize us to review and potentially air your recording.
